Yesterday I attended my first Ash Wednesday service in years. When I came home, the wonderful wife took one look at my forehead and shouted "Oh, no! You're a conservative! You're going to vote for Sarah Palin!"
The service was one of those peace things on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House. One of the prayers sounded odd at the time and it stayed with me afterward: "Isaiah, critic of militarism and prophet of peace, pray of us." For some reason, I heard it as "Isaac, critic of militarism and . . ." and it had my head spinning -- what am I forgetting about Isaac? -- until I realized my error.
Footnote: I was priveleged to hear Elizabeth McAlister speak at the service. She reminded us that "God 'n' country is not one word."
