Kayaking

Not that anyone cares, but here are some places nearby where kayaks can be rented.
  • Thompson Boat Center, across from Theodore Roosevelt Island, between Key Bridge and the Kennedy Center
  • Fletcher's Boat House, midway between Key Bridge and Chain Bridge
  • Pohick Bay Regional Park, 35 minutes south of Vienna on Mason Neck Peninsula. Guided kayak tours are available: "Get out on the water and see eagles, osprey and great blue herons."
  • Mason Neck State Park, "Rent a kayak or canoe for an hour or all day to explore Belmont Bay or Kane's Creek - a great way to see eagles."
  • Fountainhead Regional Park, "The observation deck of the Marina Building at Fountainhead commands a spectacular view of the widest point of the Occoquan Reservoir."

Waterworld

Okay, so that's not me in the yellow vest that Chuck Norris is busy rescuing.

But it could have been me, if a photographer had been at Seneca Creek Park last Saturday. I spent the better part of that afternoon learning how to do wet exits, T-rescues (like the one pictured), self-rescues (using a paddle float), and an assisted-roll rescue (that's my name for it). The common denominator for all these maneuvers? You start by strapping yourself into your kayak and then flipping yourself and your boat upside down!

It may not be sky-diving, but it's a plenty big enough rush for me. WHOOO-EEEEE!!
