Question and answer

Question: How can you transfer your contacts from your old Verizon cell phone to your new AT&T iPhone? (You heard me right, an iPhone!)

Answer: Glad you asked! As a first approximation:
  1. Buy a Bluetooth-USB adapter from Amazon. It costs $20, but you'll be able to use it for other things as well. Like maybe transferring Mary Ellen's and Katka's contacts from their old Verizon cell phones to their new AT&T cell phones. Or like maybe using a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard some day.
  2. From the Verizon phone, bluetooth your contacts to your PC. (Need details on how to do this?)
  3. Each of your contacts arrives on your PC as a separate vcf file. Combine them into a single file. How in the world can you do that? With DOS!
    FOR %x IN (*.vcf) DO TYPE "%x" >> combined.vcf
(What's that? You need a little reminder about FOR loops in DOS? Happy to oblige.)
  4. Open Address Book and import the file you just created.
  5. Launch iTunes, connect your iPhone, select Sync Contacts, and Apply.
  6. Voila!
All together now: Dan's a geek!
