How do we get from one place to another?

Eurorail passes would cost us something like $375 each ($750 total), to which we'd have to add the cost of getting to and from each train station and the cost of traveling on trains that are not part of the Eurorail system (like, I'm guessing, from La Spezia to Cinque Terra and from Naples to Sorrento and Amalfi).

"Renting" a car in Paris and returning it in Rome would cost $1300, to which we'd have to add the cost of gasoline ($6 a gallon) and maybe insurance. ("Renting" is in quotation marks because the transaction would really be a purchase/repurchase arrangement.)

Which sounds better to you? Can you say choo-choo?
