It is likely that [Luke's pentecostal] narrative [Acts 2:1-38] telescopes events that took place over a period of time and on a less dramatic scale.Gosh, d'ya think?
Footnote: Luke's account, though dramatic, wasn't dramatic enough for our preacher today. He thought there was not only the sound of wind but also the fact of wind. How much wind? Enough to shake the whole building the disciples were in! This kind of un-nuanced (I'm trying to be kind) understanding of the event led him to wonder why Peter was willing to risk life and limb after receiving the Spirit while we, who have received the same Spirit, are so much more timid. A better homily would have explained the "telescoping" mentioned above and pointed out that we needn't necessarily feel inferior to Peter and his pals -- at least in this regard.
