Passed?

When did people start saying "passed" instead of "passed away" or, heaven help us, "died"?

How can I get them to stop?

Postscript:

A woman at church this morning told us that her sister "passed" last night. Before she died, she was blowing kisses to her daughter.

That's how I want to go.
