Adults can't actually read them, can they? Didn't we leave comic books behind about 50 years ago? And the only time we read illustrated stories is when there's a grandchild around to hear, right?
The very idea of graphic novels is an abomination.
Graphic essays, however, are a whole different kettle of fish. To quote Michael O'Hare, "I love Maira Kalman!" And I love her even though I never heard of her (or Michael O'Hare, for that matter) until a few hours ago. Do yourself a favor. Read the essays O'Hare mentions. Then read "In love with A. Loncoln." And then, like me, promise yourself that you will read your way through everything else of hers that you can find.
