Free software

I've been using Firefox and OpenOfficeOrg's clone of Excel for years. A few weeks ago I installed reQall and KeePass and more recently I installed Notepad++, DVDshrink, Filezilla. All look terrific. And all are free. I don't understand why there's so much free software available -- here's one guy's guess -- but I'm glad there is.

How do you know if free software is any good? One way is to check LifeHacker, which frequently asks its readers which software they like for particular tasks: What's the best text editor? What's the best DVD ripper? What's the best FTP client? Lifehacker then reports the five programs that received the most votes, usually in an article the has the words "Hive Five" in the title. Almost(?) always, one or more of them is free. That's how I learned about the software I installed recently.
