In the past two days, I've come across at least four Latinisms and one "Frenchism" that I wasn't familiar with. To wit:
- Homo Homini Lupus
- hostes humani generis
- Post equitem sedet atra cura
- delendi sunt
- Quel dommage
(Capitalization is as it appears on the web sites where I encountered the terms.)
You know what they mean, right?
- Man is a wolf to man.
- enemies of the human race
- Behind the horseman rides black care (some of them don't make any sense even when translated)
- they must be destroyed
- What a pity (I should have known this one)
Now that I look at them all together, I'm struck by how somber and pretentious the collection is. I think I have to find a different set of blogs to read.
