Eureka!
It's official: my grandson is a genius!
Joey plans to matriculate at a preschool in a few months and this morning he had a "play date" (i.e., an entrance exam). The examiner's conclusion:
Joseph is accepted . . . We have no areas of concern. He has strong fine motor skills as evidenced by his cutting with scissors; followed directions well; knows his colors, animal names and sounds; and seemed to generally enjoy himself!He also painted a moo cow with a big brown spot.

Letter from Cassie
This morning, I was sitting at the table with Joe and we had a little ‘signing’ conversation. First he told me he was getting sleepy. Then he told me it was raining. Then he pointed to where he thought he saw a bug on the wall. Then he pointed to Abby’s photo & signed ‘sister.’ I gave him the photo, and hugged it and gave sister a kiss.
There was lots of smiling involved, because I knew exactly what he was talking about. So awesome!
More than awesome. Totally WOW!

Research shows that sign language hastens speech development, reduces frustration in young children by giving them a means to express themselves before they know how to talk, increases parent-child bonding, and lets babies communicate vital information, such as if they are hurt, or hungry. A 2000 study funded by the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development, shows that young children who learn sign language speak sooner than other children (Glairon, 2003).If I had to guess, I'd say the parent-child (and sister-brother) bonding is the biggest benefit.
